Announced in 2008, Ubisoft’s I Am Alive was in development by Darkworks, a studio no stranger to the survival genre. However, in 2010, it was revealed that due to multiple delays and ‘mutual decision’, Darkworks were no longer attached to the game. Development was handed over to Ubisofts’ Shanghai studio, and was confirmed to be undergoing a complete re-engineer from what the original developer had worked on for over 2 years.

I Am Alive essentially has no solid details outside the developers’ studio. But the original idea of the game was a First-Person title where players took the role of one few survivors of a huge earthquake that had shaken Chicago into a city full of death and despair.
It was to be a survival game where players must fight for their survival and supplies and use tactics, diversion and cunning to be top of the food chain with other survivors, who may or may not be savage due to the circumstances. We’ve seen depicted in countless films and games what people turn to and do for their own survival, and these themes fit perfectly in what I Am Alive was aiming for, possibly creating a genuinely frightening experience.
But like I say, little is known about the gameplay side of things, and with a new developer re-engineering the game, which is essentially to say they are starting it all over, things might turn out very differently in the end.

It was hinted at earlier this year that I Am Alive might become a digital distribution title, available over services like Steam, PSN and XBLA. This is unconfirmed, but I Am Alive is expected to release sometime in 2011 on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Watch this space for news as it breaks.
