This guide is designed to explain some of the commands and to list in-depth information about the many classes of Patapon 3. It will also offer tips and general strategies for forming effective teams.

Commands

Since it takes Patapon 3 awhile to explain what all of the commands are, I’m listing them here with a brief explanation. Successfully entering any three of these commands in a row will cause your party to enter Fever. If the commands are entered with poor timing, it may take more than three.

Onward: Moves your party forward, but not through enemies or hindering terrain.

Attack: Will cause each member of the party to perform a standard attack. During Fever

Defend: Will cause each member of the party to perform their individual defenses, which vary from healing to shielding to attacking depending on class.

Charge: Will result in no immediate action, but a charged attack or defend will have various offensive and defensive qualities that may be more powerful than the standard attack and defend command.

Retreat: Will cause your party to quickly pull back when you know a powerful enemy is about to attack. You have to time this correctly for it to be effective, because your party only retreats for a moment before they’re back where they started.

Jump: Will cause your party to leap into the air for four beats. This command is useful for reaching raised switches and treasure; and for avoiding ground-based attacks.

Party: Will cause any party members with negative status effects to return to normal status. Effective for burn, freeze, sleep, and poison.

Summon: Will summon forth a djinn, which causes the entire party to perform offensive and defensive actions based on their individual classes. It also revives fallen party members and can heal injured party members.

Classes

Some of the class names can be difficult to associate, so I will include a nickname for each. While this guide is not complete, it should help to clear up how to unlock each class and that class’ skill. This section is divided into shield, spear, and archer class trees, followed by the class bonus for the Uberhero. The guide will list the official class name and description, followed by the requirements to unlock the class, followed by the class skill, followed by the requirements to unlock the skill, which will be followed by the known set skills for that class. Any class can switch to another tree by achieving a level 15 base class. Set skills appear to unlock just by leveling up a class.

Tips and Strategies

Tips

Charge Attack and Defend

Always try out the charge attack and defense abilities for new classes. Some classes have very unique and beneficial abilities for offense and defense, but they require Charge to activate. Two that come quickly to mind are the Pingrek Class, which heals a great deal more with charge defense and fires an ice wall with charge attack, and the Bowmunk Class, which builds a huge earthen wall with charge defense.

Important Armor

Never destroy armor unless you already have four better pieces with the same resistances. In fact, you should go out of your way to collect freeze and burn resistant armor, since they are two of the most consistent challenges.

Strategies

Based on the skills of each class, there seems to be several schools of thought on how best to fight through the boards. Essentially, you can try to win by having an impenetrable defense; you can try to win by having a devastating attack; or you can focus on reeking havoc through status effects to disable your foes. Of course, you can mix and match and use any number of combinations, but I’m going to categorize and let you do the mixing and matching.

Defense

If a defensive group is your goal, then, as you might assume, you should choose the shield class for your Uberhero. Try using Guardira for your Uberhero class; Pingrek for your archer class; Piekron for your spear class; and Bowmunk for your second shield class. Going completely defensive has the drawback of slow killing most of the enemies, so all of your quests will take longer. There are also a few bosses where there is no such thing as perfect defense. However, when mixing, defense classes can be very useful.

Offense

If you want to go all out attack and blast your way through levels, then there are many routes to choose. Every class has their own way of doing damage, so there are many theories on how best to achieve that damage. There is a very effective trick that can be exploited for massive damage. Instead of going with the spear tree for your uberhero, try going with the shield. Unlock the Todenga Class and put a sleep club in that Patapon’s hands. The downside of club and axe weapons is their random damage and slow attack rate. However, when using the Giandeth ability, attack power is boosted so you’ll usually attack in the high end of weapon damage. Also, when using Giandeth weapon attack speed is ignored. So, it becomes a simple process of finding the most powerful club and axe to destroy just about everything. Try using Todenga Class for your uberhero; try using Charibasa for your spear class; try using Cannogabang for your archer class; and try using Grenburr for your shield class. The offensive team can be incredibly effective at destroying enemies before they ever get a chance to do serious damage, but they fall apart quickly once that damage has been dealt. It can be a real gamble whether or not you’ll make it through a quest.

Status Heck

If you want to have some fun by making even the baddest baddies useless lumps, then give this a try. There are mainly two routes to take for status attacks. You can attempt to go all out fire attack and really make your enemies feel the burn, but this is only effective if you have almost 100% burn resistant armor for your team. It is also less effective for larger enemies, while it does do incredible damage setting them on fire, they won’t run around like idiots. The other route to go is more of a status defense using sleep, stagger, and knockback weapons to keep enemies unconscious or too far away to attack. For a fire assault team, try using Wooyari Class for your Uberhero and spear class; try using Oohoroc for your archer class; and Myamsar or whichever shield class you have the best flame equipment for. If you’re going the sleep and knockback route, try using the Jamsch Class for your uberhero and archer class; try using Myamsar for your shield class; and try using Charibasa for your spear class. The effects of a status heck team rely heavily on equipment, and even with great equipment results vary.
