Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning tops the UK video game chart.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has taken the top spot in the UK gaming chart this week. The announcement should come as no surprise as the game was not only highly anticipated, but seems to have delivered on a promise.
Read on for the top 10 UK gaming chart for this week.
Kingdoms of Amalur sees off a handful of heavy competitors as it takes the crown in the UK gaming spot. Here is the top 10 list for this week.- Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
- Final Fantasy XIII-2.
- The Darkness 2
- Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
- FIFA 12
- Battlefield 3
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Mario & Sonic: London 2012 Olympics
The actual sale numbers of each game weren't released, making it difficult to know whether Kingdoms of Amalur beat out Final Fantasy by a considerable amount or not. It also makes it hard to determine the level of success the game has garnered, placing at the top of the charts in February is allot easier to accomplish than in November when the levels of competition are much higher.
Being both an original property and a role playing game, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is the first of it's kind to top the charts since Pokémon Red in 2000.
While it was hyped up as a rival to Skyrim, the general consensus is that while a great game in its own right, does fall short of the claims. Currently on Metacritic, the game's received between an 80 and 86 depending on the platform, with individual scores going from a perfect 10 out of 10 all the way down to a mediocre 5 out of 10.
EA, the publisher of the game came under fire before its release for the utilisation of a single player 'online pass'. The game disappointingly features no multiplayer components, instead the code will unlock the House of Valor which is a downloadable pack of seven exclusive quests and the Valor Arena, described as a place where "barbaric tournament and ultimately seize control of the arena."
It can be tough for original IPs to sell well, from this generation alone you can pick out examples like Enslaved, Brutal Legend and Shadow of the Damned as games that were well received by critics but largely ignored by the public. Another genre which has previously struggled to top the gaming charts are RPGs, however, with Skyrim topping the UK charts over Christmas and Final Fantasy XIII-2 last week, we are starting to see a more even distribution of genres in the chart.
Unlike movies and music, the position of a game on a sales chart seems to matter less than overall success. Placing at the top doesn't guarantee the game will be profitable, but it is a good start especially for an original IP. Maybe this tread will show publishers that they shouldn't be as scared of new properties as they currently are.
