Nintendo has announced Special Edition Kingdom Hearts 3DS
After a lackluster start, the Nintendo 3DS roared back with a vengeance. The newest Nintendo handheld sold over four million units to end 2011. What’s more, the console had several games which topped over one million units sold. These games included Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario Land 3D. Nintendo is hoping another title breaks that million unit mark and is willing to provide it with a beautiful limited edition bundle. That’s right, Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance will receive its own customized 3DS.
The Kingdom Hearts series has become one of the most beloved sagas in the Square Enix library of gems. It serves as the perfect union between Final Fantasy and Disney. An odd match on the surface, but at its core it becomes evident why it is so adored.

Dream Drop Distance is the newest iteration of the Kingdom Hearts franchise and will feature protagonists Sora and Riku as the two playable characters, as well other party member from Disney, including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and the one and only Goofy. In addition, Square has added character from the critically acclaimed Nintendo DS title, The World Ends with You.
Long serving series director Tetsuya Nomura noted that “With the tenth anniversary of the series on the horizon, the current Kingdom Hearts Saga is approaching its climactic conclusion.”
He elaborated by stating “the story of this game will serve as the opening chapter of the final conflict, and, as always will be full of surprises.”
Nomura’s quotes seem to allude to Kingdom Hearts 3 being close to production, a game many of the fans have been waiting for. Before we jump to conclusions, let’s focus on Dream Drop Distance.
The game was officially given a release date. It is scheduled to arrive in Japan on March 29th, and the limited edition console compilation was revealed. It will include the limited edition system, which looks phenomenal, an AR card that can be used to unlock a rare Dream Eater and a copy of Dream Drop Distance. Unfortunately, Square has yet to comment on whether this luscious bundle will be available in North America.

If it is not going to be launched in North America, it may be a blessing in disguise as many 3DS fans already struggled over whether to procure the Legend of Zelda or Super Mario 3D Land limited edition 3DSs upon their releases.
Nonetheless, the Dream Drop Distance so far has looked enthralling and all parties involved in the development process seem very committed to the game. Nomura further explained, “In order to best implement this element of surprise and discover new realms of possibility, we have chosen Nintendo 3DS as our platform. With its revolutionary new game system, this title will not only be a bold, exhilarating tale of adventure, but also a first look into the future form of the Kingdom Hearts series.”
