Gamergaia:Twisted_Metal_LogoSony has said to have signed a large sum contract with Brian Taylor to create a movie based on the popular Twisted Metal game. The movie which is expected to follow the same story as the games, based around the underground vehicle war battles, will surely be popular with fans of the series of games. Read on for more.

Brian Taylor, the man behind the Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and the Crank movies would surely be no surprise to direct a Twisted Metal movie. Even more unsurprising, Avi Arad, who has worked for Sony on ALL the Spiderman movies, including the latest Amazing Spiderman, is producing the Twisted Metal film with Ari Arad.  This successful group should be at top of Sony’s list for most video game movies.  Sony Pictures has contracted with Brian Taylor to write and direct the Twisted Metal film. For this feat Sony Pictures has agreed to pay a whopping seven-figure salary to Taylor.

The film will work with the Twisted Metal games’ central plot: a weaponized car battle to the death. The car match proprietor, Calypso, is determined to understand the psychology of what pushes a man over the edge of previously held beliefs. Of course, the survivor of the car battle will be granted any wish.

Plenty of movies have been inspired from popular video game franchises. Resident Evil, Super Mario Brothers, and Street Fighter rank among a few examples of video game-based movies. Although many movies have been made from popular video game franchises, the movies themselves have tended to bomb at the box office. Resident Evil, for example, has been a popular video game franchise maintaining momentum across multiple platforms. However, the Resident Evil film box office draw left a lot to be desired.

Other movies that are based on video games include: Bloodrayne, Tekken, Prince of Persia, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Double Dragon, Mortal Combat, Doom, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, Wing Commander, Hitman, and Max Payne. Some video game-based films have managed to draw top-rated actors such as Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II. Even, Jean-Claude Van Damme played a starring role in Street Fighter, and Mark Walberg portrayed the iconic Max Payne. Video game films boasting top-notch actors have faired much better at the box office. The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time performed quite will at the box office. The fact that Jake Gyllenhaal played the main role and Disney backed the movie surely had something to do with the film’s success.

Let’s hope Sony takes note and makes a winning video game-based film formula. Highly successful video game: check. Highly talented director and writer: check. Highly sought after actor or actors and wicked special effects: we will have to wait and see.
