Dante's Inferno

Genres: Action-Adventure, Platformer Producer: Visceral Games

Visceral Games, the creators of the frighteningly brilliant Dead Space franchise, bring you Dante’s Inferno. A third person hack’n’slash title, Dante’s Inferno is the video game retelling of the classic Epic Poem, The Devine Comedy.

Of course, not your typical meaning of Comedy, the poem tells the story of Dante – reimagined in the game as a Templar Knight - a traveller in Hell. So kind of like the ancient version of a tourist in Iraq. Only not nearly as dangerous.

In the game, you play Dante, a Templar Knight on the bad side of Satan. After committing serious sins during the Crusades (or did he?), Dante is marked by Death, only to kill him and take his scythe. This doesn’t go down well with the big guy downstairs, who gets revenge by kidnapping Dante’s beautiful soul mate and claiming her as his own. Dante must travel into the depths of hell and bring his love back to the land of the living.

In hell, Dante must traverse the 9 layers (as described in the aforementioned poem) and fight his inner demons and the dark forces that dwell beneath. While it’s a story that really does stand out from other games, the gameplay itself is more on the common side.

Dante’s Inferno is very similar to Sony’s popular God of War series. The combat plays out very similarly, and looks very alike too. With a mixture of close and ranged attacks, Dante’s Inferno is fast, furious and full of the good stuff – gore.

Not looking to change the genre, Dante’s Inferno is a game which simply wants to tell its story. Albeit with some extreme nudity, controversy and gore. Who are we to deny it?

Dante’s Inferno is available on Xbox 360 and PS3 and ported onto the PSP.
