Spiderman_article_iconAnother year, another Spiderman game. It seems that Spiderman and James Bond games have replaced Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero for Activision’s yearly franchise instalments along with Call of Duty. A video game adaptation of the Amazing Spiderman was revealed a few months back with the promise of a return of the earlier games open world. After a dry period of little information, a developer has given detail of a new mechanic via Facebook called “Web Rush”.

There was a time when the announcement of a new Spiderman game was exciting to hear, the earlier 3D Playstation One games brought Spidey’s skills into an action-beat ‘em up. Then the Playstation 2 games put the hero in a GTA-style open world sandbox, people loved the web slinging and wanted more, so Activision provided. What followed was a slew of games that continued to focus more and more on brawling and combat while the open world was empathised less and less to the point of being redundant. Finally with Spiderman Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time, it was fully removed and the series has sunk into mediocre games that garner little attention.

However, the first teaser trailer has highlights the return of the open world Manhattan, this focus is even more evident by the developers need to say that "Our game brings back free-roaming in Manhattan, where you guys will be able to swing around and discover a variety of side missions, challenges and mini-games in addition to the main storyline."

Perhaps in a blind hope of response, Jacob Berg asked about the new mechanics and the game’s lead designer replied with "Web Rush".

"We introduce an all-new gameplay mechanic called the Web Rush, which gives players real-time navigational and combat choices," they said. "Web Rush can be triggered on the fly, at any moment and immediately presents you with a variety of situational choices, letting you pull off Spidey's signature moves like never before."

The developer ‘Beenox’ is mostly known for their PC and Mac ports of other Activison games along with a few spin-off and movie tie-in titles. In 2010 they were handed the reigns of the Spiderman franchise, turning it into a more contained brawler. This is the first game that they have originally developed that is set in an open world sandbox, so it will be interesting to see what they could do with the mechanic will setting themselves apart from previous instalments

The game is based of the movie of the same name which is due out the 3rd of July 2012, with the game currently scheduled for a simultaneous release. The movie’s first trailer was accused of resembling Mirror’s Edge a little too much and being that it will see an iMAX release, people hope that it won’t make the nauseous.

Coincidentally, the first released screenshot of the game also resembles EA’s first person platformer with a highly detailed Spiderman overlooking a city of mostly white buildings with scaffolding on the rooftops.
